Elarna Birth & Beyond - Update # 5

Elarna Update - 5 months!

My little princess is 5 months old, it seems mental that next month she will have been with us for half a year already. I'm amazed at how she is progressing, much quicker than Alfie did at this stage, she is already trying to crawl which I'm not happy about....... slow down baby girl! You can read the last update about her here, it's amazing how in a month things change!

The good news is that she has now been discharged from hospital. When born, Elarna was diagnosed with a slight heart murmur and hole in the heart, click here if you fancy having a nosey of my birth story and how this was discovered. Thankfully, we had a check up a couple of weeks ago and the hole has closed and the murmur is barely there so no follow up is required which obviously is great news. As she was being examined the consultant even remarked that she looked far to well to be in the heart clinic!

She had her first soft play experience the week before last, my Mum came to help me so we decided to take Alfie to burn off some excess energy.......and Mummy! Elarna wasn't too sure about the ball pool but did like the little baby area with the baby toys!

In the last update Elarna was almost rolling over, well a few after writing that post she aced it and now that's all she does, she much prefers being on her front where she can try and crawl. Alfie, bless him has being demonstrating to her how to do it!

I can't believe how quick she seems to get the hang of things, Alfie didn't crawl until he was about 8 months old, he was quick when he finally did though but Elarna at 5 months is just about crawling which is mad. She's also very into grabbing things and her grip is vice like, she likes to touch things and feel them and almost seems comforted if something is in her hand, especially something soft like a blanket or muslin, it seems to calm her somewhat.

I'll show you how to do it Elarna!

The sibling relationship is something that I am really enjoying watching grow. Elarna is fascinated by Alfie, she just follows him around with her eyes and if she's crying he just has to go to her and she'll stop (most of the time), he tells me if she's been sick or if she's crying and gives her toys and hands me her muslin if he thinks she needs it. As I'm an only child watching this is unbelievably lovely. At times I do have to watch Alfie as he can get a little carried away and be rough with her, we often have to remind him that she is only little (15lbs at her last weigh in!). I think he does realise that burying her in the sofa cushions or trying to physically roll her over and over is not the best thing to do.................cue Mummy Panic!

I have recently had a memory bear made from Elarna's old sleepsuits, I had one made with Alfie but wasn't overly impressed with it but I have found this amazing lady in Norfolk who has made me the most lovely one......... you can find more info over on her Facebook page, I urge you to have a nose at Strawberry Blossom Sewing Room, I love it, she makes lots of handmade things which are lovely! It's a great way of making a keepsake.

Clothes wise, I am still managing to squeeze her into some 0-3 clothes but generally we are well into the 3-6 size, I can imagine her being in this size for a little while longer as some of the things we have still swamp her!

I am slowly starting to wean her, again unlike Alfie who was weaned more or less fully at her age she doesn't seem hugely interested. Alfie was a massively hungry, from birth right up until the point of weaning he would constantly want feeding, it was exhausting! Currently,  I give her 4 bottles a day between 3-4 hours apart and she has 8-9 ounces, she never really seems overly hungry in between but she is showing some signs of weaning so have started offering a little bit of baby rice at around 5pm, I shall start  offering a bit more in the next couple of weeks I think. Weaning is one of those awful grey areas that I'm never really sure if there is a right or wrong so I will just do as I did when Alfie was a baby and be led by her.

She has been a little unsettled with her sleeping and I have to pop in to her occasionally to give a dummy if and when she wakes, this has been quite sporadic in the last few days, but she will drift back off again.... I am wondering if we have the start of teething as she constantly has her fist in her mouth and is quite dribbly.....no teeth as yet though!

I'll just read to her Mummy. :)

So my next update will be her 6 month update.......her half birthday.......if someone could just slow down time that would be marvellous! If I was a gambling lady I would be putting money on that she will be crawling before my next update. Well I guess you'll have to wait and to see to find out, until then thanks for reading and following our journey!

Siblings. So much love.

  8. Gosh what a relief to be signed off!! She is super cute. Second babies definitely seem to do everything much faster. Whether it is because you don't have as much time to document their every facial expression as you are busy with your first born too or because they are so desperate to follow their sibling I'm not sure. As an only child myself, watching the sibling relationship develop has been one of the best things ever. Also resulted in a lot of 'is this normal' phone calls to friends too. Apparently attempting to batter each other over a teddy is absolutely normal sibling behaviour! ;) Thanks for hosting again. #bestandworst

  13. What a cutie pie! My tot was also born with a small murmur. He still has it but it isn't affecting him. Still a worry though, you must be glad you don't have that lingering any more. Our lad started crawling at 6 months...sounds like they have a lot in common. Thanks for letting me host #bestandworst with you xxx

  14. It's amazing how different siblings can bet isn't it? I'm always surprised by how different my youngest two are.

Lexie was always quite a big baby and always wore the next size up clothes. At 18 months old she was already in age 2-3. Be glad that you don't have to keep buying bigger clothes ;-)

Visiting from #bestandworst. Thanks for hosting.

  15. Aww so cute! Glad her hole in the heart has closed. Love that memory bear - when I finally get around to it, I am planning to make these for each of my girls. My two weaned completely differently. Started eldest at 6 months and she immediately took to eating loads of everything & dropped most of her day time milk. Started baby at 6 months and she wasn't interested at all. She wouldn't really eat anything very much until 10-11 months old, but she's good now. Doesn't have her sister's appetite though! #bestandworst

  21. What great news about being discharged, that must be such a relief. She is so cute and it's lovely to see her growing and interacting with her big brother. I'm constantly amazed by the differences between our two, Thea also got the hang of things much quicker than her big sister, I guess it's a second child thing, they just want to keep up with their big brother or sister!
