A Visit to Legoland!

Just over a week ago we had a very exciting day planned. We were off to Legoland Windsor. We have been wanting to visit for absolutely ages but have never got round to it. It's not really that far from us, it took us just over an hour and a half which isn't too bad at all. We arrived at 10am, bang on opening and the car park was already filling up. The weather was dry, although cloudy to start of with but this actually was quite nice to wander round as it wasn't too hot.

My husbands sister and her husband live around half an hour away from Windsor so it seemed the ideal opportunity to meet up with them and their little boy, Alfie's cousin. One of the things that had been putting us off going was the entry cost. We had heard from several people that it is mega expensive to get in and they are not wrong. We don't mind paying an entry fee for a great day out but when I saw the cost online I have to admit I thought it was pretty steep.

So there are several different prices. You can either pay on the day and pay the full cost (a staggering £50.40 for an adult and £46.20 for a child), you can pre-book online and if you book several days in advance you can save a fair amount. E.G, if you book 7 or more days in advance the price comes down to £27.00 a ticket (for either adult or child), if you book 2-6 days in advance the tickets then cost £40.00 a ticket. You can also choose to purchase a 1 or 2 day ticket depending on how long you want to stay.We were planning on using one of the vouchers we had been collecting from Kellogg's cereals which was a free adult entry but because my sister-in-law has Merlin annual passes they could get us all in for guests meaning we paid £10.00 each, so this was a huge help.

A beautiful view over to Windsor Castle which you can just make out.
This is the 1st time that Alfie has been to something like this, his first choice of a day out is usually the zoo so taking him to a theme park is very new for him and initially he was a little overwhelmed! It took a little while for him to warm up and become excited about what Legoland was all about and what it had to offer.

To get to the actual park itself the best way down is to use the funicular train which takes a couple of minutes to the bottom of the hill. Once you get to the bottom you are immediately surrounded by Lego and lots of it. The place is soooo big it's hard to know where to start.

There are several different lands throughout, these include:

  • Duplo Valley
  • Adventure Land
  • Pirate Shores
  • Land of the Vikings
  • Kingdom of the Pharaohs
  • Lego City
  • Mini Land
  • Knights Kingdom
  • Heartlake City
  • Adventure Land

We started at Lego City and the first ride the boys went on was Fire Academy where it's a race against time to power a fire engine across a short distance and put out a 'burning' fire.........definitely an energetic way to start the day off. Fun for Daddy and son without a doubt!

We then headed over to the Coastguard HQ which we could all go on. This was alot of fun, it consists of sitting in a battery powered boat and driving it around a course avoiding obstacles and admiring the Lego models placed around.......there also may be a bit of water squirting too which was funny. One of the things that I wondered prior to visiting is whether Elarna would be able to go anything, I needn't have worried as there are several rides suitable for under 3's, there is a list available here which tells you which are suitable, we particularly liked the fairytale brook which we went on later in the day. Alfie was able to go on most rides, because he's a little bit on the short side there were some that he couldn't go on but mostly he could go on a majority.

We then took the Heartlake City Express train which heads through the park with lots of Lego models to look at and enjoy.......there was also the chance of getting a little wet too!

We then went on my favourite ride (other than fairytale brook) which was the Atlantis Submarine Voyage, this was beyond cool! You get inside a yellow Lego submarine and it takes through an underwater journey where there are masses of tropical fish, stingray and SHARKS all surrounded by lots of underwater themed Lego models. It was absolutely brilliant and if the queue hadn't have been quite so big I would have loved to gone round again. It was such a unique and fun ride that we all could go on and enjoy. After we had been on this the boys made a little mini Lego shark outside, this cost £3.50 and it was cute little memento for them to keep. It was also nice to have a few minutes to sit quietly and chill.

After all this fun and excitement it was definitely time to grab something to eat, the boys were getting hungry and a bit fractious and we all needed a drink and a sit down. We headed over to Heartlake City and went to the eat as much as you want pizza and pasta restaurant. Do you know what as far as it went for food there was plenty of choice and the pizza was delicious (it tasted very similar to a popular chain pizza restaurant!), I liked that it was eat as much as you like as we could just help ourselves and get our moneys worth, overall it cost around £50 for 4 adults and 2 kids, not bad considering! After eating we managed to catch one of the 2 shows that they put on in the display area. We watched the pirates of skeleton bay (there is another one which is called Lego friends to the rescue), it was a great show, sadly I didn't get any pictures as I was squeezed onto a step with Alfie but it involved lots of swashbuckling adventure, acrobatics and throwing themselves into the water.........very good and the kids seem to really enjoy it.

After we'd all got alot more energy we walked over to Pirate Shores. Adi, my husband was desperate to take Alfie on one of the bigger rides, sadly his cousin who is a bit younger wasn't quite tall enough for some of the bigger rides so I waited with Elarna (who eventually had a power nap) and the boys queued for the pirate falls log flume. Now this was the one that had a bit queue, we'd been quite lucky up till now but I would say we waited a good 45 minutes for them to come down(with some incredibly annoying pirate music that was on a loop!). I think it was worth it though as Alfie had the biggest smile when he came down! He is such a thrill seeker like his Daddy. However.........he was soaked. I knew he was going to get wet but he was drenched! Luckily I had put a change of clothes in but not a new hoody so this meant that he either froze or we spent an extortionate amount on a new one......I'm sure you can guess what we did. £20 later he had a new, dry hoody! Sadly at this point the rain did start to fall and although it wasn't heavy it was starting to get a bit colder. We decided not to do any more water rides and head over to Duplo Valley, although not until the spinning spider was tried, much to my delight watching my hubby turn a shade of green as he was spun round very fast!

As we headed to Duplo Valley the rain did start to become a bit heavier, the splash towers and drench safari were open and we were debating letting Alfie go on it but 1. we had no more clothes, 2. we'd have to buy home some more swimming trunks and 3. he was really chilly so we decided against it. Instead we went on the fairytale brook which was so cute. They are little leaf boats that gently take you around a brook with lots of fairytale Lego characters, it's very gentle but very cute and I loved it. If I hadn't already got a wet bum from the wet seats and was a bit warmer I would have loved to have gone around again. Instead we decided on one more ride and then to head home. Our final ride was the Duplo Valley Airport. They were these crazy helicopter that you directed up and down and round and round.........because it wasn't very busy we stayed on these and I think we had about 6 goes. It was a good last ride before we left.

Lastly we walked through Mini Land which as the name suggests mini replicas of all sorts of landmarks made out of Lego. Honestly, it blows you away, there is so much to see and the detail in some of them models is incredible. I couldn't put more pictures on as I took so many but I picked out a few of my fave's. I especially loved some of the moving items such as the trains and ferries, just so much detail and thought had gone into it.

Overall we had a fantastic time. It was fun for everyone, not just the kids and so much to see and do. I think that's the downside really,  that it's just so big that it's impossible to do everything in one day. Not that I'm saying there's too much to do as I guess it is to entice you back but there really is too much to try and cram in to one visit. We are already planning our return trip, I'm hoping that we can stay in the Legoland hotel as I showed Alfie the themed rooms and he said that he would just love to stay and actually so would I! So perhaps in a few months I can grant him his wish. I'm already looking forward to our next visit.

Has anyone else visited Legoland? Did you love it as much as us?

* Please note, I wasn't paid in any way for this review I just wanted to write about having a great family day out!

Our Week!

Wow, the week really did fly past in a blur. I have been soooo busy over the last few days every day seems to have gone into the next. Last weekend we had an absolutely fab time over at Legoland in Windsor (review to come soon), we met Adi's sister in law and her husband and son, we've been meaning to go for ages and we just happened to be free on that weekend (well kind of, may have had to rearrange the BFF but I'll make it up to her!) so it was a good time to meet them. We had a great day, albeit very long and we need to go back again as it is soooo big and impossible to fit everything in one day and we missed a few bits so need to make a return trip at somepoint. It was a definite hit with kids and grown ups alike.

Sunday we took Alfie to watch the new Thomas and Friends film at the cinema, although he doesn't seem as mad on Thomas as has done previously he still loved watching the film. We've taken him to the cinema a few times now and he absolutely loves it, he sits with his popcorn engrossed in the film and doesn't move a muscle. I actually quite liked this new film too so if you have a Thomas fan it's well worth seeing. Alfie has lots more films lined up to see at the cinema so I think we better start sweet talking the grandparents to look after Elarna as she's at the age where she won't sit still and she stayed at home with my mum and dad while we went off to the cinema. After the cinema I had a cheeky little stop of to buy some new curtains for our living room, the past owners kindly left the curtains which has been helpful but they were these awful pale, yellow floral things......not by cup of tea so I'm slowly replacing them for some much more my style (think charcoal and black, much more glamorous!). Anyway I digress.

Monday I had 1/2 a day at work,  this was incredibly short notice to book off but I needed to attend Alfie's pre-school to sort out some bits for him transitioning to school and he also had his little sports day. This was so lovely, all the kids did so well......Alfie excelled at the egg and spoon race hehe, didn't drop the egg once! He was very proud to receive a little medal and certificate for his efforts. It was a lovely way to spend a couple of hours! I was off on Tuesday as usual, this was my 'hair day', wahooo no more roots! Wednesday I was working, it was a full on day, busy but went quickly and that meant 6 days off when the day was done. Thursday was Alfie's 4th birthday! I was feeling a little emotional, I still can't quite believe I'm now Mummy to a 4 year old.......insane. We had a GREAT day, we started the morning with all his pressies which I think he enjoyed immensely! We then spent the day at Woburn Safari Park, I haven't been hear for years and years and I was a little excited hehe. Alfie, as I've mentioned before is a big fan of wildlife and animals and we seem to be working our way through all the zoos we can, even in just his short life so far we have been to more zoos than I have in my life.......I think we have been to 9 in total so far and 2 of these are French zoos and also we have visited a couple of these more than once, think that's pretty good going so far ha! Still more to visit though so I see us being busy over the next few years. We finished the day off with tea at Frankie & Benny's! Friday we kept the littlies in nursery/pre-school so Adi could pick Alfie's cake up and I could go and do the (mammoth) shop for his party today.......OMG I bought soooo much, it was actually spilling over the top of the trolley, wish I'd taken a picture! I spent the rest of Friday cleaning, tidying and baking and making various party bags. Don't feel that stressed about it now, I think it's going to be an ace day......plus get to see lots of our friends and family and meet some blogger friends that are local to the area which I'm looking forward to!

So as you can see. pretty busy week here in the Beautiful Things household! How has your week been?

Delaying your Period?

Being a woman can suck sometimes. You know that time in the month, well it always comes at the most inconvenient times. Did you know that there are things you can do to delay it if required. When I went on holiday last year I was 10 week post birth and just knew that the chances are my period would arrive while I was away so my very lovely GP prescribed me a medication that would delay this from happening. Of course these types of meds are only to be used under GP advice but it is good to know that they are available if needed. Have a read of the below post for more information.

Caribbean, Sunset, Summer, Travel, Vacation, Holiday

Is it safe to delay your period?

If you’re gearing up for a summer holiday, preparing for a wedding or you’ve got other plans that you think your period could ruin, you might be looking for ways to delay your monthly visitor. But what are the best ways to prevent your period from arriving at an awkward moment, and are they safe?
Using a period delay treatment
If you’re not on the pill, the best way to stop your period from spoiling your plans is to take a medicine called norethisterone. Available on prescription from your doctor, chemists and online pharmacies such as Click Pharmacy, this treatment contains a form of progesterone and it works by stopping your womb lining from shedding. It comes in tablet form and you’ll need to start taking it three days before your period is due. You can use it for up to 17 days.
This treatment is popular and safe, and it can be a simple and effective way to stop your period from getting in the way of your plans. However, it’s important to note that it might not be suitable for you if you have a history of blood clots. Also, some women have reported side effects such as nausea, bloating and headaches when taking it. If you want to find out more about the treatment and discover whether it’s right for you, you can research it online or speak to a health specialist.
Taking your pill packs back to back
If you’re on the combined contraceptive pill, you don’t need to seek a specialist treatment. Simply taking two packs of your pills back to back could delay your period. Rather than having a seven-day break between packs, just start your new one the day after you finish the last pill in your current pack. Bear in mind though, this isn’t always 100 per cent effective - and it’s not an option if you’re on a progestogen-only pill.
Also, you shouldn’t take more than a couple of packs without a break unless you’ve been told it’s  OK to do so by your doctor. This is because using this contraceptive without a break for more than two packs can cause stomach pains, bloating and unexpected bleeding.
With these options to choose from, you should find it straightforward to delay your period. Always make sure you consult a doctor or pharmacist if you’re unsure of the facts though, and follow the information provided on your norethisterone or contraceptive packs carefully.

Happy 4th Birthday Alfie!

So here we are. May 2016. It has been nearly 4 whole years since I gave birth to my little Alfie pants. Did I blink and miss the last 4 years? My little lad is going to be 4, we are going to be parents of a FOUR year old for goodness sake. We are leaving the threenage years behind (I hope) and entering a new stage (the fearsome foursomes apparently, excellent)!

I still remember giving birth and labour vividly, it's strange but I do sometimes have flashbacks, because I was left quite traumatised I suspect this is quite normal but I do find myself dwelling on the birth and the weeks that followed alot when it comes around to birthday time.

Through a drug induced and exhausted, lack of sleep state I remember being wheeled into the ward and just stared at this squidgy little thing that we'd made. I wanted to cuddle him close and I stared at him for what seemed like hours. He was a perfect bundle of squishiness. Who knew the time would escape me so quickly and I'd be soon staring at 4 year old cheeky lad starting school in September. I actually feel quite emotional while writing this, it's just insane. I wish I could just slow down time, I take hundreds of photos that I love to look back on, I never want to miss a thing and love (most of the non tantrumming!) time with him.

Alfie is a character. I see traits of both myself and my hubby in him. He's cheeky, so cheeky, he's stubborn, sensitive, funny, loud, active and non stop ALL day, caring, at times shy, intelligent and sharp as a button.  He doesn't miss a trick, his memory is insane, so sharp that at times it's scary! He's obsessed with dinosaurs, Thomas and Friends, anything constructiony and wildlife/zoo animals. He loves to look through the animal encyclopaedia and will quite happily sit and watch Steve Backshall on the TV. He loves to watch Disney films but just as equally as playing outside and getting mucky.

To celebrate his birthday we are going to Woburn Safari Park, he is really looking forward to it and considering we seem to be working our way through the UK zoos I hope it's as good as I remember. On Saturday we are having a bit of a party with a bouncy castle and cake......oh there will be lots of cake! I think he's looking forward to it, I expect he might be a little over whelmed but I'm sure once he's gotten over that he'll be bouncing all over the place.

So my little cheeky monkey, happy fourth birthday and here is to your next, exciting year!

Choosing a Dementia Care Home.

Working within the healthcare sector makes me only just aware of the possibility of dementia. It is something that concerns more and more with family. Having worked with people suffering from dementia and their families I know just how difficult it can be.

So what is dementia? Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a collection of symptoms that may include difficulties with thinking, processing thoughts, problem solving and at times language. This list is not exhaustive though, even during my career as a Nurse so far I have seem a wide range of varying symptoms that patients present with. As I mentioned above dementia is the umbrella term as there are various types of dementia that people can suffer from, these include Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, fronto-temporal dementia, lewy body, cjd and more rarer types which you can read more about here

Sadly, some people suffering with dementia are unable to live independently at home and need to reside in a care home, this is where Barchester Healthcare steps in. At Barchester they understand the importance of making a home from home environment and a person centred and caring approach. The aim is also on making the living as individual for peoples needs as possible which I think is fantastic.

https://www.barchester.com/

With dementia week just recently passed it seems an appropriate time to bring awareness to the front of peoples minds and emphasis the importance of these 'home from home' care environments which can truly make a massive difference in not only a dementia sufferers life but their nearest and dearest too.

For more information Barchester Healthcare have put together this handy booklet to help make informed choices with regards to your loved ones health and future when living with dementia.

* Please note this is a collaborative posts but it is truly something I care a great deal about.

Harley Street Hair Care - Review

Sometimes when you need a little pick me up a parcel unexpectedly arrives that you genuinely had no idea was coming. When the postie turned up a couple of weeks ago with a huge white box festooned with a beautiful blue ribbon I really thought he'd got the wrong house! It was only when I unwrapped it that I remembered where it was from........ Harley Street Hair Clinic, how fab.

I have to say when I opened the package I was blown away with the contents. I mean there was some seriously nice items included and not just 1 or 2 bottles but a handful.......so generous. According to the lovely note card that was included the items sent were all hand picked by the clinic director that he would personally recommend. I have horrendously frizzy hair and trust me when I say I need all the help I can get with products to help ease it.

So as you can see there is some really, really nice items. So many lovely brands that I haven't tested them all out yet, it was hard to know what to go for first.

What exactly was in the box?

  • Phyto ultra intelligent shampoo - this is a general, all round shampoo, it's great for adding density to the hair. I haven't tried this one yet but when my hair looks like it needs a little pick me up this will be the one I reach for.
  • Korres - this is the shampoo perfect for problem hair or dandruff. This contains wheatgerm which cools the scalp, sounds like a good one to take away on holiday!
  • Neals Yard (a brand I am familiar with) I had the intensive coconut oil  treatment and nurturing rose shampoo. The shampoo smells amazing and leaves my hair shiny, the coconut oil treatment is also fantastic and really gave my hair a shiny boost.
  • Sachajuan ocean mist volume shampoo - This smells fab, I'm looking forward to trying this one out.
There were also 3 sachets to try with hair care remedies which I'm saving for my holiday as they will be perfect to pop in my makeup bag and give my hair some TLC as needed.

A little bit more about Harley Street Hair Clinic and what they do:

  • The only UK hair clinic to specialise in follicular transfer hair transplant technology
  • It's a very technical, precise non-invasive procedure with fantastic, natural looking results.
  • Hair transplants aren't just for older men!
  • The procedures are carried out by highly experienced and specialist physicians.
  • One of Harley Streets goals is to change peoples attitudes about hair loss.
Check out this infographic, I always love statistics and facts and this has some very interesting ones about going bald.

* Please note I was kindly sent these items free of charge in exchange for an honest post, all thoughts and opinions are my own!

Our Week!

Well it's been an ok week, not great but could have been worse I guess, towards the latter end of the week it did start to get a little better. Saturday we spent a lovely few hours at a local swimming pool, my children are such water babies, they absolutely love the water and Alfie especially is really coming on well with his swimming. It was a great way to start the weekend. Saturday afternoon I started to feel a bit icky but thought it was perhaps just tiredness, as the day went on it was clear that I wasn't feeling great, I came to the conclusion that I had a touch of food poisoning, wasn't a pleasant way to spend the erst of the afternoon/evening. Sunday I felt a little better, we had our friends little girls 4th birthday party to attend at a softplay, it was great and Alfie had a lovely time. Just like the that the weekend was over!

Tuesday was glorious, we were so lucky that the sun came out for us on my day off, I spent the day doing jobs around the house and spending time with the kiddies in the garden. Alfie played so nice with Elarna, I managed to get some great pictured of him passing a ball to her and almost showing her to pass it back to him and creating a little game, it was so sweet. We were woken by Elarna at around 11:30pm screaming and puking, so random as she had been fine during the day

Yesterday, my other day off was spent hoovering and steaming (again!), mowing the lawn and playing trains with Alfie......well I say playing, he played and I watched! We had lots of fun in the garden and I witnessed some gorgeous sibling playing. Sometimes Alfie can be quite rough with Elarna but oh my goodness he played so lovely with her and it was gorgeous to watch. I felt really summery over the last couple of days, a bit of sun really does pick my mood up and it's so lovely to spend some time out in the garden......although I have to have eyes in the back of my head because one minute Elarna is in my view and the next she's up to no good elsewhere in the garden!

This is my week, it's been ok! How has yours been? I have a mega busy weekend coming up followed by a packed week preparing for Alfie's 4th birthday, busy, busy!!

My favourite link up in last weeks link up was from the lovely Natalie who blogs at Mum in Brum , I loved this post all about buying a sailing boat and the challenges of sailing with a toddler, just goes to show if you want to do something go and do it and embrace everything that comes with it. Lovely post.
