Student Nurse to Registered Nurse........new challenges!!

I'm approaching what is both a very exciting and scary time of my life. In the next few weeks I will have completed my nursing course and be a fully fledged registered nurse (arghh!). The last 4 years (yes 4 years and not 3 as expected due to our unexpected bundle of fun in the shape of Alfie!) have probably been the most challenging and testing. Currently I am well into my final placement (13 weeks) and am nearing the end, I have learnt so much in this time and it's not been easy coming back into education as a 'mature student'! I am also over the moon that I was successful at a recent interview and have been offered a post within the team I am currently working with which is a massive weight off my shoulders as trying to secure a job after is always a worrying time.

It's going to be so strange being out of that student bubble where you feel all protected and safe within the university boundaries but once I've got my pin and I'm practising as a registered nurse it all changes. I can't wait for the next chapter of my life to start, it's going to be full of new experiences and challenges, I can't wait to get stuck in and become a community nurse.

This is obviously not my first career, prior to starting my training I actually worked with animals and had many qualifications in animal care, I still love animals but decided that I wanted to move away from working with them and also retail and wanted something more challenging and a change really!

Just to explain why I chose nursing ......... about 5 years ago now my Dad suffered a serious heart attack, he was very poorly and it was touch and go for a while. He was given a double heart bypass operation and I'm very fortunate that he is still with us today.

It was after my Dad had his operation I decided to 1. quit smoking and 2. re-evaluate my life, I'd reached a stage where I'd moved home and didn't really have a career or job so it seemed an ideal time to apply for a University course (madness right!) and I was accepted onto the adult nursing course and here I am 4 years later at the end of my training!

I would say I'm definitely a community nurse rather than a hospital nurse, I love everything about the role, the autonomy, the variety of cases, the skills you use and develop and most of all the relationships you can build with patients in their own homes. It is most definitely a fulfilling career, I really am very excited to qualify.

I can't wait to see where my career takes me and what I'll be doing in the next few years!
