Garden Games & Activities!

Now the weather is starting to pick up and get a little warmer it's the perfect time to clean up the garden, get the outdoor toys out and get outside for some fresh air. Both of my 2 are very much outdoor children and love nothing better than getting filthy, playing in the sandpit and just generally being outside running riot!

We have alot of outdoor toys for the children and most recently my husband has made them a designated little play area to try and contain their toys here rather than then being scattered all over the garden. We're pretty lucky to have a decent sized garden, our previous house had a very small garden and although we made full use of the space it is lovely to be able to have more space for them to run around and play in.

So if you're thinking about investing in some outdoor toys I thought I would share a few of my thoughts on what my children love and what keeps them entertained. I have 5 year old Alfie and 2 year old Elarna, now that Elarna is that bit older all the outdoor things we do have are fairly good to be used by both of them.

My first choice has to be our trampoline, this has got to be our most used piece of outdoor equipment. I actually bought it on a whim before we moved house, it never would have fit in our previous garden and I knew Alfie would have loved it. It was on offer at the time and hands down I have to say the best £65.00 I have ever spent......hours and hours of bouncing and entertainment. I think at some point we will upgrade it to a slightly larger one but for the moment it serves its purpose and is very much enjoyed

My next suggestion would be a slide, this was bought when Alfie was 1 year old I think and it's very well used, Elarna loves to play on it now and so does Alfie still! It's a nice size, we probably could do with a slightly larger one for Alfie but seen as he still gets use from it we will be keeping it for a while longer.

The sandpit we have is also brilliant (if you can cope with sandy mess). We have a lovely sandpit that has a slatted cover than turns into seats so they don't have to sit directly in the sand. I would say whenever the weather is nice the kids are happy to play in it together for a while. Alfie is very good and knows to wipe himself down before coming in the house but Elarna needs to learn this a bit more! There is something about sand that attracts kids so it's most certainly a good investment.

Some sort of ball game. We have a basketball net which both Alfie and Elarna love, Elarna has her own method of shooting hoops (think a chair and standing on said chair chucking the ball through the hoop!), Alfie just loves trying to get the ball through the net. For Alfie's birthday my parents bought a football goal for him as he's been showing real interest in playing football since starting school, so I can't wait to set that up for him as I think he'll enjoy trying to score goals.

I can't write an outdoorsy post without mentioning water. Of course, children love to play with water. Me.....not so much. Water play is something I do try and restrict because they just get too over excited! That being said they do have a sweet little waterway toy with ducks that float around so I fill that up and let them play with it when it's warm. Bubbles are also a winner in our house, we have this brilliant bubble tornado that is filled with bubble mix in a reservoir which is battery powered and basically blows a ton of bubbles out creating lots of giggles and trying to catch the bubbles. It does use alot of bubble mix though and although I have experimented with a variety of others the official bubble mix is the best one to use.

Finally, a sports day kit. I bought this fab little set last year to take away with us on holiday and it was brilliant. It contained an egg and spoon race, a sack race, bean bag throwing and a three legged race. I can't tell you how much we used it and it will definitely be coming away with us this year. Really good for encouraging physical activity and having fun.

We really do love getting outdoor in the sun and enjoying fresh air, I think it's so important for children to be able to get outside and enjoy the outdoors when they can. Has anyone else get on any ideas for outdoor activities?

Kit and Kin *Review*

Have you heard of Kit & Kin? Perhaps not. Well I'm going to tell you a little more about this brand. Recently launched Kit & Kin has been founded by 'baby spice' herself Emma Bunton and Christopher Money. Frustrated by the increase of harmful and unsustainable products Emma and Chris were inspired to create an eco-friendly brand that was both affordable and appealing to families.

It can be a difficult move to break into an industry that is packed full of different brands promising different things but Kit & Kin are really trying to make a mark with their biodegradable and chemical free products.

So what have been testing out?

We were sent a lovely selection of items to test out. We received some nappies, nappy sacks, bubble bath, hair and body and wash and some magic salve. Firstly, I adore the packaging. It's clean, it's fresh and something that I would pick up and put in my shopping basket. It looks appealing and I like it alot.

The design of the nappies (RRP 9.99 full price or £7.49 as part of the subscription pack) are utterly adorable, plain white on the front with the cutest animal design on the back, we were sent the bear, as modelled by Elarna further down, they also fit beautifully and were very snug and had a good absorbency to them during the day, although they didn't keep her dry through the night but I put this down to them being on longer. Each nappy uses more sustainable, uses less chemicals and are dermatologically tested . The nappy sacks are also bio-degradable and come in a rather handy little box with the cute design on the front, I also like how slim the box is meaning it's very space saving if you want to pop them into the changing bag.

The bubble bath and hair and body wash (both have a RRP of £7.99) were nice, they created a lovely lather the only thing missing was a nice scent. I don't know about you but when my kids have been playing and are grubby I want to make them smell nice so I'm always a little disappointed when these kind of products just don't smell of anything. That being said they create lots of beautiful bubbles and left both Alfie and Elarna's skin feeling nice and soft. My favourite item has to be the magic salve (RRP £7.99), oh I loved this. It has a light and fresh fragrance, lavender I think and it slowly melts into your hands as you scoop it out of the pot and rub your hands together. It's designed to be a nappy salve but I have to admit I smothered Elarna in it as I found it made her skin so smooth. It smelt so good.

Did you know that conventional nappies are one of the main contributors to landfill in the world today. That's an awful thought isn't it, and I have to admit to being one of those contributors. According to statistics we throw away 8 million nappies every day.  The amazing thing with Kit & Kin nappies is that the majority of it and the packaging will biodegrade within 3 - 5 years. So not only can you be assured that you are using a reputable product you're also doing your bit for the environment.

So if you fancy trying something more sustainable and more environmentally friendly absolutely check out Kit & Kin and have a look through their full range of products.

* Please note I was kindly sent these items free of charge in exchange for an honest and unbiased review, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness is a form of meditation. It means living in the present moment without too much concern for the past or future. Quieting the mind is very good for your overall health and wellness. Just like your body needs rest from being overworked, so does your brain. Start with short sessions and work your way to longer guided meditations.

Everyone needs a hobby, especially when we get older and start working less. Starting a garden and learning how to plant flowers is an excellent way to challenge yourself and pass the time. Visit this website to get educate yourself on what you should plant and in which month. Become the gardening expert with a few games of Bingo Blooms. Put yourself First
Last but not least, you need to always put yourself first. If you’re not healthy and happy, nobody will be in your home. Surround yourself with people who support your goals and encourage your healthy habits. Don’t worry if you fall off track. Simply start again tomorrow and remember why you’re doing it. Living the Dream *Lottoland Review*

Ohhh to be rich. I often wonder what I would do if I won the lottery, it's been many a conversation with my husband and what we'd do with a ton of money, would we stop working, spend or save, splurge or be sensible. I guess it all depends on how much we won......but if it happened to be a fair amount I know exactly what I would do.  I'd splurge.....I know I would, it's in my veins to spend! Sorry dear husband. So now I've said that I bet you're dying to hear what I would do with a lottery win.......

1. I would pay off our mortgage, the parents and if we had won a huge amount I would extend that to our closest friends. That's a sensible one isn't it!

2. I would stop working. I would perhaps still keep my toe dipped in with the occasional shift here and there but I would stop being a salaried member of staff.

3. This one is a bit predictable, but I would book a huge family holiday - somewhere hot and exotic. I'd want to create memories for us all to look back on.

4. I'd be a little bit sensible and invest some money. I'm sure where exactly I would invest it but somewhere  that would be beneficial to the children's future.

5. I would tick a few things off my bucket list, like going to Disney in Florida, seeing the Northern Lights, going to Lapland and going back to Bali to renew our wedding vows.

6. I would give some money to charity. I would spread the love around  to several charities that are close to  my heart.

7. I would buy a couple of cars. I always fancied an Audi Q5, would love to be able to buy one of them!

8. I would throw a big party. Well why on earth not!! Lets get all the family and friends together and have a brilliant time.

9. I would buy a pair of Louboutins and a Mulberry bag, just because I could!

10. Art. I love art so I would choose a bit of art that reflects myself and the family. A classic. Something I could look at everyday and be reminded how grateful I am.

Image result for lottoland image

I know that alot of these are fairly materialistic but in the grand scheme of things it is only a wish list. It's fun to think of things that I would spend money on if it were no object. Recently, I have been working in conjunction with Lottoland reviewing their site and having a little go on some of their games. Most people will be aware of the Euromillions and how to play it, but what about something slightly a little different. Lottoland offer you the chance of making a bet of the official lottery draw. You pick the numbers you think that will be drawn and if you guess correctly you can win prizes.  For more information on how it works go have a read here. If the Euromillions doesn't take your fancy what about entering to bet on the numbers drawn on the Powerball or even some of the instant games which are fun to have a go on.

So if you were lucky enough to win a substantial amount of money what would you do with it?

* In partnership with Lottoland.

Why isn't the World a Nicer Place?

What news to wake up to. The awful tragedy that happened on Monday night in Manchester. I have not stopped thinking about it all day. I had shivers watching the news coverage and felt incredibly emotional watching parents appeal for their children that are now missing. Mums, Dads, Grandparents, guardians will have waved their super excited children off to watch Ariana Grande, they would have been full of beans, feeling grown up being allowed into the arena by themselves and with their friends ready to watch their idol perform. Some might say it's a rite of passage.  Some of these innocent kids and teenagers may not have made it home.

I was allowed to go and watch Boyzone and Justin Timberlake when I was around 12 years old. I remember it well, the pure anticipation and excitement getting ready to watch our idols.  My Mum would often take me and my best friend, she would sit in the car and mark her work (she was a teacher) ready for the next day and then wait for us to come out buzzing. I remember us being so thrilled to watch our favourite pop stars perform and being allowed to find our way to our seats and watch them all by our self it was so flipping exciting! I found myself thinking that in a few years time this could have been Alfie or Elarna going to a show or concert........but what if they didn't come out of that arena. The fear and panic those innocent people in there must have gone through I can't even begin to imagine. What sort of a world do we live in? These awful atrocities that keep occurring are becoming all the more common and that worries me greatly.

What sort of a world are our children growing up in? How do we bring our children up in a world full of hatred and negativity and ensure that they are compassionate, friendly and nice individuals. I constantly tell Alfie it's nice to be nice and horrible to be horrible. He's only 5, he has no real clue what is going on in the world and currently is oblivious to what has happened in Manchester. I know I can't shield him forever but I certainly don't want to expose him to the harrowing news reports and images at this age. Elarna at the age of 2 just sees the world as a voyage of discovery at the moment and I'm happy for that to continue. I've never been one to wrap them in cotton wool and I embrace them being independent and free spirits and I hope as they grow up they will continue to do so despite all the nastiness in the world.

I'm not afraid to go to places, nor do I worry constantly as what is the point of that. What I am though, is aware. I am aware that bad things happen, terrorism is rife and this seems to be the world we life in now. I'm not going to stop going on the train, underground or attend a concert. I'm still going to visit shopping centres, I didn't even really feel that much at risk when I visited NYC a few years ago. So I am aware, yes, but scared no.

Looking back to my childhood and when I was little I used to play outside our house, I would even play in the field near our house. We literally had no cares in the world. We would make flower perfume from lavender and daisies, ride our bikes and scuff our knees. The world was our oyster and our parents felt that they could let us do this. Would I let my kids do this now.....hell no. Not because I'm worried that they might get bombed but other awful reasons like them being lured away and being kidnapped. I wish that things were different and that the world was a nicer place. I wish that I could let the kids play out and I know they would be safe but these days it just doesn't sit right with me. I just don't get where all this hatred has stemmed from. What does it really achieve? I dread to think what things will be like when my kids are grown up, and they're bringing up their children.

So, I finish this post off to say that yes it's a bit all over the place but I just wanted to write how I've been feeling. I've been thinking about things all day, I feel sickened to my core and I wish things were how they used to be. We will stand together, united. We will not be brought down be these twisted individuals and we will unite.

The Desire for Baby Number 3.

My ovaries are twitching. I am broody. My heart tells me I would like a 3rd baby and yet my head can't fully decide. My husband says a resounding no. It's quite hard to digest really. My body is telling me that I'm fertile and able to bear another child but yet I vividly remember after labouring with Elarna declaring that I would never have another (I blame the drugs) so why do I feel like I'm not quite done yet.

I'm age 33, I'm hardly old and feel that there is still place in my heart and home for another child. I can't quite get my head around never being pregnant again, never going through labour and never holding a newborn against my chest. I almost feel like I've forgotten what it feels like to nurture and mother a newborn.  My timehop keeps reminding just how little my 2 were when they were born, well I say little they were 7lbs but it's so easy to forget how small they feel in your arms.

Excuse the candid shot!

Being female is a funny thing. Hormones play havoc with you. I often find myself wondering what having a 3rd would be like. I regularly hear people say that a 3rd just slots right in and doesn't make much difference than transitioning from 1 child to 2. I wonder what a 3rd labour would be like, would we have a boy or a girl and how Elarna would feel about being a big sister, would Alfie like being the eldest? I don't know if it stems from being an only child wanting my children to have siblings, I was never really lonely growing up, my parents always encouraged me to socialise and get out and about and I always had a good group of friends so I do wonder why I am thinking about a 3rd.  I knew I always wanted more than one child and if I'm being honest I always thought that 2 would be it for me, lots of people have called me lucky as I have 1 of each, and of course I am but having both a girl and a boy was never something I had planned, lets face it was a 50% chance of one or the other. I always thought I wasn't overly maternal but perhaps I am, I find being a Mum both incredibly tough but highly rewarding. There are days when I categorically don't want to add a 3rd to the brood but then other days I would. You see where my head is right now?!

It is a difficult situation to be in, as I said about my husband is really not keen. He is 1 of 3 and was the youngest sibling so perhaps from his experience 3 isn't the magic number. He also wants us to get a bit more of our life back and not have to pay childcare for years and years and I can totally see that. I really can and completely get it but still......I don't feel 'done' yet. I do moan at times.........I think every parent does. Having children is restrictive, there is no denying it, life is by no means what it used to be. I also admit, I moaned throughout my pregnancy, of course I felt blessed but I was uncomfortable, my pelvis ached, I couldn't sleep, I remember well the horrific nausea and dizziness I suffered and the fact I could barely eat due to acid reflux. I remember labour being awful, I haven't forgotten these things yet the desire for a 3rd is there. It's just there, in my mind eating away at me. How does one tell their ovaries that they are redundant, they are done....bye bye....... and no longer a use is required. It's not quite as simple as that though is it, my body tells me one thing, my husband says another and my head......well my head is all over the place. I'm not talking about having a 3rd imminently, but in 6 months or even a years time I feel it would be a good time to consider it. Alfie is older and more aware of things and pretty independent. Elarna is reaching the age that Alfie was when we had her and she loves her dollies and babies so I think she would love to be a big sister.

Am I being selfish? Perhaps I AM being selfish? I have no idea. I have 2 beautiful children, 1 of each is incredibly lucky as I'm often told so maybe I am just being a selfish cow in this desire to add to my family. You tell me.......Perhaps I should get a flipping puppy?? Maybe that is the answer. It isn't though is it. A puppy would maybe simpler mind you. Still wouldn't stop me wanting a 3rd baby though.

What are your thoughts? Am I being selfish or just normal thoughts of a 33 year old woman?

We would love to see more of you over on Instagram and Twitter sharing your pictures and posts with myself @helsy_1983 and Sarah @runjumpscrap this can be throughout the whole week not just when our linky runs and we will then aim to feature some depending on who uses the hashtag. As this is still a fairly new thing for us it might take a few weeks before people start using the hashtag more.

So as always, on with the linky........please have a little read of the rules and we look forward to reading this weeks posts.

Sarah is away this week so I am flying solo, looking forward to reading all your ace posts!

We are going to be keeping a close eye on the commenting in the coming weeks, it's not fair to link and run so please take some time to visit some other blogs and comment, linkys  only work if people spend time to read other blogs and comment on them.

Rules
  • The linky will open at 5.30am on a Wednesday and close at 23.55pm on a Friday
  • You can link up one or two posts each week
  • Please comment on the 2 posts before yours and have a nosey at the host's too. We've noticed that some people have just been link dropping and not commenting on the 2 in front, please do return the favour so everyone gets some comments and linky love, thankyou.
  • ***Please add the badge to the bottom of your page so everyone knows where you have linked up***
  • Tweet your hosts @helsy_1983 and @RunJumpScrap once linked up so we can retweet you. When tweeting and commenting use the hashtag #bestandworst so everyone knows where you have come from and remember to hashtag us over on Instagram too
