When the new year rolls around, it’s really easy to have that motivation to go to the gym and get back in shape. Unfortunately, the novelty of this soon wears off and by the end of January, you’re back where you started. If this sounds like you and you’re finding it hard to get the motivation to get back into it, then keep reading for some great tips on how to stay on track come the new year.

Write down reminders of why you’re doing it
A great way to stay on track is by taking the time to write down little reminders of why you want to get in shape. Is it because you’ve been feeling sluggish? Or perhaps it’s because you’ve got a big holiday next year and want to feel good in a bikini? Whatever your reasons, you may have days where you simply can’t be bothered. That’s where these reminders come into play. Leaving them in strategic places such as on your fridge, next to your bed, or even by the phone will help remind you why you wanted to do this in the first place. Hopefully, it will give you the push you need to pop in that workout DVD and get going.
Sign up for a challenge
Most people tend to put in more effort if they don’t want to let themselves or someone else down, and this can easily be achieved if you sign yourself up for a challenge. Why not look into doing something that raises money for a good cause to give you extra motivation? Even if you’re really out of shape, you can use a personal trainer to help push you towards that goal. The great thing about these kinds of challenges is that you don’t have to do it alone and once you have completed it, you’ll be fitter, stronger, and you’ll have helped a great cause.
Find an exercise you enjoy
10k runs aren’t for everyone, and if running, jogging, or training at the gym isn’t for you, then you need to find an exercise that you do enjoy. This could be taking part in a team sport at the weekends, or you might find some time alone swimming laps first thing in the morning is exactly what you need to get your day going. The sooner you can find an activity you enjoy, the sooner you can dedicate yourself to it and start seeing progress.
Don’t do it alone
Exercising can be very lonely, and if you’re self conscious to begin with, you might give up and go home. Find a friend, family member or co-worker to take this journey with you. It doesn’t matter if you’re at different fitness levels either - it’s about giving each other motivation and reminding each other why you’re doing it. You may even find that you make friends along the way when taking part in group sports or visiting the gym. You can never have too many people around you egging you on to achieve exactly what you want to.
