Why I Hate Lego.

Lego. It is the bane of my life. I have to be honest I hate the stuff. Alfie has an ever growing pile of the stuff and of course I'm always thankful for any he has received as gifts but oh my god the stuff does my head in. Hate is a strong word, I suppose really I should say I dislike it.....although that being said I did quite enjoy myself making up one of the sets that Alfie got for Christmas......until he smashed it up undoing all my hard work!

I have to confess, it's all in one box now and it's has been out of sight, out of mind in the spare room. Bad Mummy. I'd hidden it on the top of the bookshelf and up till recently it had kind of been forgotten about......until the other day when he spotted it and it made its way downstairs again. I don't really mind him playing with it but sometimes all those little, itty bits can be too much!

I honestly think it's the work of the devil. These brightly coloured, classic and timeless bricks hold a multitude of sins.

Shall I discuss?

  • I think we can all agree that the WORST thing about Lego is the pain it inflicts. Most likely when you decide not to turn the light on in a room to open the curtains. You walk across the floor bare foot and *uck, f*c*, fuc*ity, f*ck, fu*k. You stand on the one bit of Lego that you missed when cleaning up and my god do you know about it. I cannot begin to describe the excruciating pain when standing on a Lego brick.........death by Lego, bet it's happened! If you've never stood on any Lego before just stab yourself in the foot a few times with a knitting needle! Who would have thought something so innocent looking could be the work of the devil.

  • It gets everywhere, it's small and it spreads. No matter what I do to try and contain it I find it under the sofa, in the sofa, under the oven, in the toilet, in the bed, I've even found the stuff in a bowl in a cupboard!
  • It's so hard to tidy away, there seems to be no simple way other than to scoop and chuck it back in the box and the pieces are soooo little it takes forever! Plus....there is always a bit that you miss (see 1st moan ^^^!).
  • I get that it's a great idea, it gets the creative juices flowing, imagination working and it's fun but Alfie never seems to last longer than 10 minutes before getting bored.......plus he never builds what he is supposed to and ends up just building walls. I'm thinking as he gets older he'll become more interested in actually building cars and things like that.

  • Bits go missing. The one time that I do try and help him build an actual thing using the instructions, guess what we are missing vital parts! Well either than or my eyesight can't spot the pieces!
  • Alfie takes great pleasure in once he's finished building something his creation gets crushed and then Lego bits get lobbed across the room......grrrrrr.

I guess what I do like about Lego is it looks pretty.....ha. Only joking, in reality Lego isn't all that bad, I like to see Alfie playing happily with it and clicking the bricks together, he does always seem very proud of his creations and for that I will always smile and love him for it.

Just a tongue in cheek post from me really. Anyone else my dislike for Lego? What toys bug the hell out of you if you don't share my love of Lego.

  1. We haven't quite advanced to Lego yet and we're still loitering in Duplo territory for now. I am not looking forward to it though. The Duplo box comes out most mornings, gets emptied all over the floor by the tots, and after having been stood on several times (I quote your "f*ckity f*ck*), it all gets scooped up by 10 am and shoved out of reach for the rest of the day. Perhaps it should only be played with in the bath (Without water) or other enclosed area, just for the sake of our feet!?

    Great post.

  2. haha, I have a love hate relationship with lego. I spent most of christmas building lego with oldest and then youngest came along and demolished it, after days and days of work, much to oldest's great upset (and mine). I do love that it is creative and that youngest and oldest can normally do it together. But like you say what I don't love is the pain it causes when standing on it! If only someone could invent lego that didn't hurt and cleaned it self away..... #bestandworst

  4. Oh I love Lego! More than the kids I think! I know what you mean about the pain it inflicts though! #bestandworst

  5. Haha, I hear you. I think when we were little we accepted that you only got one chance to build something as per instructions and that was the first time you opened the box. After that- forget it!

  6. We're still at the Duplo stage so it's not so bad! I build it and he breaks it ;) I don't mind Lego at all, but I might feel differently about it once it's scattered from one end of my house to the other!

  7. I can't agree Helen I'm afraid, I love the stuff. I grew up building it and couldn't wait for Seb to start. I have to admit it's great now he can read the instructions and build it all by himself ;) I still take it with us if we're going away in case of a rainy day. Seb has been known to sit all day playing happily with lego. Very funny post though....it does get everywhere and I used to hate it when he smashed up somehthing we'd taken days to build!! xx

  8. Great post. I really feel guilty when i try t hide toys such as Lego away from the kids.
I just hate it when you stand on a piece with your bare foot and ouch! You really feel like getting the whole lot and throwing it away. However when they make beautiful things out of the Lego and all siblings are getting on and building together you seem to forget about the 100 times you have stood on Lego and nearly swore out loud.

  9. I don't know whether to take offence, being Danish and all ;-) We haven't reached the lego stage, though my dad did buy Caspian some Duplo, so we'll definitely go down that route. I've seen these fab playmat/storage bags. Here's a link: http://www.howkapow.com/play-go-blue-zig-zag-playmat?gclid=CJz_wtKks8sCFbcW0wodesgNMw - then once they have finished playing you simply pull the drawstring and it's stored for next time. Just an idea :) #bestandworst

  10. Agree with everything you said. Except that hate is too strong a word lol. I think that the word hate when it comes to lego is perfectly acceptable. Personally I think you were far too polite actually. It's takes a ridiculous amount of time to tidy up and yes it hurts like a b!**h when you tread on it. Enough said.

  11. Ha! I've been feeling the same way about fuzzy felt, which I'm finding in the strangest places. It is easier on the feet though...

  12. This did make me giggle! Personally, I come from a household who love Lego. My son is obsessed, my daughter no1 has recently discovered Lego Friends and even the baby is now into Duplo! But, oh, the pain! When you walk into my sons room to turn his nightlight off and he has left numerous teeny tiny bricks on the floor!! I feel it too!! xx

  13. we have not discovered Lego in our house yet, I am dreading the day we do. Not for the imagination and creativity it will develop, I just don't want to stand on one of those little bricks barefoot!

  14. It's weird because I love Lego yet I still agree with all the reasons why you hate it! Standing on a piece is a pain that I can't even begin to describe. I once stood on a drawing pin that went right up into my foot and that was nowhere near as painful as standing on Lego! Thanks for hosting #bestandworst

  15. I hate the stuff too!! I agree with all the points you made, but especially the one about it spreading...!! How does it manage to get absolutely everywhere??! Does it levitate, or grow little Lego centipede legs and walk to the furthest corners of the house??! I try and hide ours too, but my husband used to be really into it, and wants the boys to be into it too, so always tried to unhide it...! Flipping Lego!

  16. I was there with you, but slowly I'm coming around. The more things she has to play with that I don't need to help with, the more I can get done around here. We have been big into lincoln logs lately. A bigger, less painful alternative

  17. Haha 'ends up just building walls..' that's what I remember about Lego. My 3 year old has just got into Shopkins, which sounds just as annoying!

  18. I have to deal with duplo at the moment as little man is too young for lego, but he loves duplo so imagine he will love lego too. Thank you for the warning #bestandworst

  19. Haha. We are not at the Lego stage yet but I do hate colourful toys that don't match my decor! And anything that sings and gets in my head when I am trying to get to sleep (previous precious sleep!) #bestandworst

  20. I don't mind Lego - have you seen the Frozen stuff? It's got transparent flames, clear blue ice - amazing! #bestandworst

  22. Totally agree. My boys are just getting into it and at such a young ages it's very fiddly! #bestandworst xx

  23. My wee one is too young for Lego still, but I loved playing with it as a kid! I can see why it annoys you, though - there's nothing like the pain of a Lego piece on your bare foot! #bestandworst

  24. The pain. Oh the pain. It's actually in my Top 5 pain if truth be told. I'm not a fan of lego either!! #bestandworst

  25. Luckily for us we are still only at at the megabloks stage at the moment, but that stuff annoys me enough as it is so I am dreading the day we move on to fully fledged teeny tiny impossible to clear up lego! #BestandWorst

  26. I agree! My Rory is the same age as Alfie and he has a similar attention span with stuff like Lego. Confession - he doesn't have any of his own! He has mega bloks and wooden building blocks but no Lego yet (silently high fiving myself) - I'm dreading the day he gets Lego but Daddy is very excited! My biggest worry is that my youngest will eat tiny pieces! Thankfully he's starting to outgrow the 'putting everything in his mouth' stage and will hopefully be completely past this phase once Rory gets his first set of Lego :) Thanks for hosting #bestandworst

  27. Hahaha this is a stage we've not reached yet, but one that hubby can't wait for! He's got his old sets all ready too. I can see both sides, the annoyances and the fun. I'm sure he'll get more ambitious with what he builds as he gets older, and maybe tidier :-) #bestandworst

  28. You should definitely not come to my house then! I recently took photos of all my son's kits so he can choose which one he wants to play with from pics on the ipad rather than try to store it all in our living room - well, turns out he has 30 sets! (birthday, christmas and a competition win...) We tend to put on kit out on a tray so the bits don't go everywhere. Also, we have a spares pot so every time you find a random bit (usually embedded into your foot) you can just pop it in the spares pot, which alleviates the problem of not being able to locate vital pieces. :) Hope my tips help you to find some jagged plastic love for the little stuff!

  29. Lol I know exactly what you mean and thankfully mine have passed the Lego phase. I'm fully expecting it to come back at some point but for now we can walk barefoot around the house!! #best

  30. Oh my gosh, totally! The lego pain, eeek! Im just glad that my little one is still playing with the relatively large duplo size stuff at the moment, but they can still inflict their own type of pain and get lost all over the house. Love the stuff but totally agree with you too ;-) Emily #bestandworst

  31. Oh the death of the Lego! I'm always vacuuming up the small pieces and I'll be damned if I'm digging through the dirt in the canister to pick them out. I tell my kids if they can't be bothered to pick them up then bye bye they go. I have stepped on more of those damn things than I care to in a lifetime. Thanks so much for hostessing #bestandworst.

  32. Lego is probably my favourite one of their toys because it's one of their favourites, meaning I can get some washing done. But I agree with you. We have bits missing, stray pieces across the house and we've just invested in a huge basket to contain the stuff. Our little drawer just wasn't holding it all in. Plus it's expensive isn't it!

    ReplyDelete
  33. OOOHH!!! LEGO! I am scared of Lego- and they are *everywhere* but I have a handy weapon, the vacuum which sucks up any misbehaving piece from which there is no return. So my kids know to pack up because I bring up the vacuum, they know I mean business. #bestandworst

  34. I love Lego except when I tread on it - you're right, it does hurt! Ironically, the post I linked up for this week's #bestandworst is full of Lego. Sorry!

  35. Haha I know what you mean. Monkey loves lego though so far we keep it contained when LM is awake so she doesn't eat it and together they play with duplo. I now insist both are played with on a blanket so I can fold it up and tip it back into the box as I hate scooping the stuff up! Xx

    ReplyDelete
  36. I find it in my washing machine on a regular basis. It drives me a bit crazy but I do think it's brilliant for creativity and hand/eye coordination so I can just about handle it. xx #BestandWorst

  37. Oh no I'm the opposite, I LOVE Lego! Can't wait until Baby Lighty is old enough to play with it (he's already on Duplo at 9 months old!). My friend runs Lego challenge days at her children's book shop, and she said it's the one toy that she sees all children playing with nicely, working together as a team etc. Thanks for hosting #bestandworst, it's good to join you despite our differing Lego views ;)

  38. I absolutely love playing with Lego but agree it's a pain when it gets everywhere and when you step on it! I'm half looking forward to Toby getting into it and half dreading it!xx

    ReplyDelete
  39. Haha, yes, I can understand this! I bring it out at intervals, but don't have it around to play with every day as would drive me insane! The kids do like it & learn stuff with it though! #bestandworst

  40. I wrote a post a while ago about my love hate relationship. Is it just me that has the urge to sort it all my colour and brick size?! I forgive all of it's sins for the fact that I can now get 30 minutes peace! #effitFriday

  41. Ha ha, I have a very love/hate relationship for all the reasons you said. But I can't help but marvel at the simple genius of the concept and T does adore it. Thanks for sharing :) #bestandworst

  42. Thankfully we're still at the duplo stage - I remember the Lego pain too well from my own childhood! Right now Marianna's singing VTech chicken is driving me mad, there are only so many times you can hear 'Hi there, I'm a chicken, I love living on the farm' before you start to crack up! x #effitfriday

  43. Haha, we're a few years off this stage so I have a while to prepare myself yet! Maybe I'll just pretend it doesn't exist and get Taylor into dolls instead! :) #bestandworst

  44. My baby is too small for lego yet, but my brother used to be obsessed with it, so I did grow up with it. I bought some for my nephew last Christmas and could not believe the price of it, it's really expensive! Something else to add to your list perhaps?! #effitfriday

  45. We've had 2 boxes. The first one every time I found a bit I threw it in the bin (bad bad bad Mummy) the second one has remained in tact in a "safe place" since I had the 20 minutes fun of building it!!xx
