Elarna Birth & Beyond - Update #2

Elarna Update 4 -6 Weeks.

3 weeks have passed since I wrote my last update, you can read that here if you missed it. Elarna is now 6 weeks old, 7 weeks on Wednesday and yet again the days are passing scarily fast and in a blur and she is changing every single day. It's amazing to see I forgot just how much they change in these first few weeks, she is alot much more awake now and I love seeing her beautiful big eyes looking at me each day.

She was weighed last week by the Health Visitor and now weighs a lovely 4.5kg/9lb 14oz so she's really chunked up since birth and I can tell when I'm carrying her and you can see it in her gorgeous chubby cheeks! She is just about out of her first born babygrow's and  starting to fit into 0-3 size, although these are still quite big on her, it's a shame really as she's got some gorgeous first size grows! She is now on the 50th centile in her red book so she's jumped up from the 25th centile, she's pretty much following a similar pattern that Alfie did. Her length and head circumference have also increased, she is still a little on the short side but then myself and my husband aren't exactly blessed in the height department so it's no real surprise. She's also hitting all her milestone's which is reassuring and we've been getting some lovely smiles which is nice, although Daddy seems to get them more than me, I really have to work for them!

I have noticed some patterns emerging in her feeding and sleeping, although she is really guzzling her milk and takes around 4-6 oz per feed which can be every couple of hours! I have been using size 1 teats in her bottles but on advice from the Health Visitor I'm going to up them to the next size as I think she is starting to get frustrated trying to get her milk and seems to be suffering a bit with wind and the teat size could be contributing to this, it can also take an absolute age for her to feed which again could be due to the teat sizes.

She isn't doing too badly with sleeping, I find that like her brother she doesn't tend to sleep much during the day, more like little power naps than full on sleeps which means come the end of the day she can be a little grouchy and overtired! In my last update I was worrying about how to work the bedtime routine with both of them, it's still work in progress but it is improving. I usually start getting Elarna ready for bed at around 6pm and then my husband brings Alfie up at around 6:45pm, seeing as Alfie won't let me put him to bed ever at the moment (!!), it's working out best for me to sort Elarna out. Once she's settled for the night, which can sometimes take 90 minutes she will mostly have a decent sleep till around midnight/1am when my husband will do the last feed before bringing her into our room. I then find she will usually go till between 3am-5am (depending on when the last feed was), then she will go for another couple of hours but is quite unsettled and will just have short stints of sleep which is quite knackering as I'm cuddling her then putting her back but then she cries again so it is quite tiring!

We had our 6 week check the other day and everything is fine apart from the Dr detected the heart murmur again, you may remember if you read my blog that when Elarna was first born they detected a murmur but it had disappeared after 24 hours. So unfortunately because he detected that she is being referred to the Paediatrician for a scan, hopefully everything will be ok he didn't seem overly concerned but obviously as a Mum you always tend to worry about things like this.

Alfie continues to be fascinated by her and thankfully his behaviour has settled quite a bit, we still have the odd moment of attention seeking but otherwise he's good. He likes to hold her and is always intrigued when she has her nappy changed for some reason!

I continue to recover ok, still a little sore at times but otherwise physically I'm fine! I'm pretty tired (obviously) but I'm plodding on and functioning....most of the time! In the next couple of weeks I have Elarna's first set of jabs (boohoo!) and then it's all about preparing for our first family of four holiday  together, scary but exciting!

  1. Your little one is absolutely precious! I hope the heart murmur resolves itself. They really do grow up too quick, don't they? Thank you for vicariously taking me down memory lane, when my son was that small. <3

  9. I'm so glad everything is going so well! My J had a murmur too, but it turned out to be nothing, although we, too, saw a cardiologist for her. It amazes me how different things are between the US and just about every other industrialized country! We're pretty much left to ourselves after having babies. No health visitor or anything like that!
